The Adventurer's Guide to Santander, Cebu

(Note: The Adventurer's Guide is a new feature in this blog. This travel guide series aims to give you quality and relevant travel information and tips regarding the featured destination.)

The first travel destinations that will be featured are the towns in Southern Cebu. It's because just recently I backpacked around Southern Cebu in 2 days- the cheapest way possible. I also calculated all my travel expenses while exploring the southern part of Cebu.

The Destination: Santander, Cebu
Santander is a municipality in the southern part of the province of Cebu. It is actually located in the southernmost tip of the province. The town is about 139 kilometers from Cebu City. Santander is the right place for beach lovers and divers because it offers a lot of white-sand beaches and great diving spots. Santander is also the place where locals and travelers can go when they are bound for Negros Oriental. Santander is named after a city which is in the northern coast of Spain.

Cebu City to Santander - PhP160-180 (ordinary bus, approximately 3 to 3.5 hours travel time)

Places to Explore
1. Municipal Hall
If you have extra time, take a short visit to the town hall which is along the national highway. You can go directly to the Tourism Office so you will be guided around Santander.

You can also see a statue just in front of the town hall.

2. Liloan Ports
Three of the four ports in Santander going to Negros Oriental is in Brgy. Liloan. You can choose the mode of transportation you like: barge/ship, fast craft, or pump-boat.

-- In Cebu City, ride a bus going to Santander at the South Bus Terminal.
-- Tell the driver's aide (konduktor) to drop you at the Liloan port. Specify what type of vessel you want to ride.
-- In Liloan, the bus will pass by the fast craft terminal first then the pump-boat wharf and the port.
-- The fast craft terminal is named, Puerto del Sur.
-- Liloan, Santander to Sibulan, Dumaguete is the usual route.
-- The pump-boats has the cheapest fare.

3. Bato Terminal
This is the place where you can ride a bus if you are going to the southwestern part of Cebu where the towns of Samboan, Ginatilan, Malabuyoc, Badian, Moalboal, and Barili are located.

4. You can also explore these places: Eden Resort, Albion Seaside Resort, Pebbles Beach Resort, Bonga Villa Beach Resort, Marine Villa Dive House.

For Your Taste-buds
Try the very famous local delicacy of Santander, the tostado.

Travel Tips:
1. Take the early morning bus from Cebu City's South Bus Terminal to avoid traffic. You can choose between aircon and ordinary buses.
2. If you want to visit the town proper, you can tell the driver's aide (konduktor) to drop you near the municipal hall.
3. It is best to visit the beaches in Santander.
