The Adventurer's Guide to Barili, Cebu

(Note: The Adventurer's Guide is a new feature in this blog. This travel guide series aims to give quality and relevant travel information and tips to all types of travelers who are planning to visit the featured destination.)

The first travel destinations that I will feature are the towns in Southern Cebu. It's because just recently I backpacked around Southern Cebu in 2 days- the cheapest way possible. I also calculated all travel expenses while exploring the southern part of Cebu.

The Destination: Barili, Cebu
Barili is a municipality in the southwestern part of Cebu. It is located 61 kilometers away from Cebu City. Historically, the town's name Barili comes from the word balili, a kind of grass growing in the locality. A legend is told that many, many years ago, there was a couple who built their house on a plateau in the middle of a swamp. Their child, Inday Balili was also born there. Near their house was a big tree with a vine intertwining on its trunk. That vine is locally known as loy-a loy-a or balili. One day, a group of Spaniards visited the place. The official asked the name of the place while touching the leaves of the vine. Thinking that the official asked for its name, the couple answered balili. That word was then made the name of the locality.

It is the main natural attraction in Barili. It is also one of Cebu's tallest waterfalls. Mantayupan Falls, also known by the locals as Ambakan Falls, has two levels. The first level are three waterfalls with the height of 14 meters. The second level is a waterfall which is 98 meters high.

2. Tilapia Fishing Village and Restaurant
This is near Mantayupan Falls. One can relax here, and order a tilapia cooked in your own preference for lunch.

3. Sayaw Beach + Rock Formations and Caves
This is one of Barili's famous beaches. White-sand, pristine, clean, and with a great view of Negros Oriental, Sayaw Beach is ideal for swimming and beach bumming. One can also go boating to see the rock formations and caves near the beach.

Travel Tips:
1. Take the early morning bus from Cebu City's South Bus Terminal to avoid traffic. You can choose between aircon and ordinary buses.
2. Tell the driver's aide (konduktor) to drop you at Shamrock Terminal, you can hire a habal-habal for Mantayupan Falls there or you can walk towards the market area.

    1. Hello there! Well, if you will ask, it depends on what side in Southern Cebu you want to go. If in Southeast Cebu, the easy or accessible falls there is Tumalog in Oslob. In the Southwestern part, there is Inambakan Falls in Ginatilan, Kawasan Falls in Badian, and Mantayupan Falls in Barili. I suggest you go to Kawasan Falls! :)

    1. Hi there! This one is very late reply, I apologize. For those who want to go there, motorcycles from the town center can bring you to the falls. Furthermore, if you have a car, you can also go there because the road is good, and it is not very far from the highway. You just have to pay an amount for the car park at the entrance of the falls.

The fare of the motorcycle or "habal-habal" going there ranges from 20 to 30 pesos each for one way.

      Enjoy! :)

    1. Hello Troy! Thanks for leaving a comment here. Actually, I am not familiar with the accommodations in Barili. But I think you can find cheap and good ones at the town proper, near Shamrock area. It is because everytime I go to Barili, I only stop by the falls and the beach during day trips. :)
