Lapu-Lapu and the Battle of Mactan

Lapu-Lapu. For most of us, he is a well-known hero!

A review of our Philippine History lessons will remind us that he is now regarded as the first Filipino hero. He was also the first Filipino who made a resistance against the Spaniards in their colonization of the Philippines. That time, Lapu-Lapu was the Datu of Mactan when the Spaniards arrived in our country.

The Battle of Mactan

According to the annals of our history, on April 27, 1521, Lapu-Lapu led the warriors of Mactan with primitive weapons, in a battle against Fernando de Magallanes (Ferdinand Magellan). That battle was later known as the Battle of Mactan, where Magellan was killed.

And on April 27, 2012, 491 years after that historic battle, Lapu-Lapu City celebrated the Kadaugan sa Mactan (Kadaugan is a Visayan term for victory). Included in the festivities, is a reenactment of the Battle of Mactan. Many people (thousands maybe) thronged to the Lapu-Lapu Shrine in Mactan. And I was one of them.

I am so amazed how the people of Lapu-Lapu City treasured and valued this very important part of our history. All I can say is that, they are really proud of Lapu-Lapu and what he had achieved for our country!
